INDUSTRY COLLABORATION

Global Network of Partnerships:

Sony Pictures partners with local consortiums established in major film and television production hubs to support the adoption of new technologies, establish sustainable services and infrastructure, and educate and increase industry awareness around the environment.

Sony Pictures’ Sustainability Team partners with the following Sustainable Production Consortiums

In 2010, the Sustainable Production Alliance (SPA), made up of major studio sustainability teams, developed the Green Production Guide in collaboration with the Producers Guild of America (PGA). In 2024, SPA was relaunched as the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance (SEA). Their collaboration aligns studios on sustainability standards, publishes benchmark reports, and supports the development of sustainable content creation.

The Green Production Guide (GPG) provides sustainable production tools, including a carbon calculator, best practices, industry tutorials, and a list of industry-friendly vendors offering sustainable products and services.  Additionally, SEA’s working groups and task forces promote clean mobile energy usage, materials circularity, training and professional development and on-screen messaging.

Reel Green is the Sustainable Productions arm of B.C. Creates, British Columbia’s Film Commission, formed in 2014 as part of British Columbia’s Reel Green initiative. Reel Green draws membership from studio sustainability representatives, the Director’s Guild of Canada (DGC), content producers and government employees, and many other stakeholders across Western Canada’s Film and TV industry. This consortium trains crewmembers on sustainable practices, publicizes clean power initiative opportunities, and facilitates connections between emerging and established vendors and production teams.

Ontario Green Screen formed in 2020, as the Sustainable Production arm of Ontario Creates,- a government agency tasked with supporting film and television production in Ontario. They provide training courses to the Greater Toronto region in many areas of Sustainable Production, including carbon calculator use and taking advantage of clean power opportunities on location.  Ontario Green Screen also publishes guides to waste diversion, grid tie-in locations, and transportation best practices for productions, in addition to vendor guides for the Toronto area.

BAFTA albert

albert began as a carbon calculator project at the BBC backed by BAFTA and other UK broadcasters in 2011. albert’s current structure includes a TV industry Steering Group, Consortium, Affiliates and the Education Partnership which operate in the UK and internationally, through local partnerships. albert’s vision to support screen industries transition to net-zero is driven by a Climate Action Blueprint, created in conjunction with screen industries. The strategy includes specific objectives in four key areas: standards measurement and reporting; content and storytelling; off-screen actions; culture & capability. albert offers online production toolkits, training, events, vendor database, and guides for climate storytelling through their “Planet Placement” initiative.

Sustainable Screens Australia was founded in 2020, in partnership with albert and BAFTA- and launched officially in June 2023 with an industry round-table and new working groups. SSA is based in Melbourne, but supports sustainable production efforts in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania., and provides a forum for discussion, collaboration and alignment on common goals for filmmakers, suppliers of services and technology, and studio sustainability representatives. This consortium allows for this diverse stakeholder group to advocate for sustainability practices both at the private industry and governmental level. Additionally, SSA supports the adoption of new technology throughout Australian production, trains local sustainability managers to work on productions, and publicizes sustainable production success stories.
