OUTLANDER
As Outlander’s eighth and final season came to a close last month, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is proud to recognize the production’s long-standing commitment to sustainability. Since Season One, Outlander has successfully participated in SPE’s sustainability program, consistently reducing its carbon footprint and improving the environmental performance of its primary studio facility.
Key sustainability milestones include:
- Transforming Wardpark Studios: Originally a manufacturing facility, Wardpark Studios in Scotland has served as Outlander’s main production base. Since Season One, the site has been progressively upgraded with expanded LED lighting, improved insulation, electric vehicle charging stations, more efficient heating systems, and additional purpose-built stages. Since Season Six (2021), the studio has operated on 100% locally sourced renewable electricity.
- Raising Awareness: Sustainability has been embedded across the crew through ongoing initiatives and clear communication. During Season Eight, 146 crew members completed SPE’s internal sustainable production training, strengthening awareness across departments. Messaging is reinforced through on-site signage encouraging simple actions such as turning off lights and equipment when not in use. A dedicated “green memo” is also shared during prep to outline key environmental goals, expectations, and best practices.
- Focus on Fuel: Fuel use remains the largest source of emissions for a continuing one-hour scripted drama. At the start of Season Seven (2022), part of the diesel used for stage heating, on-set facilities, lighting, and selected vehicles was replaced with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). This renewable drop-in fuel can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel. The transition has been supported by additional measures, including trials of hybrid generators.
- Circularity: A large prop storage facility preserves materials from previous seasons, supported by a regular donation program to extend their life. Reusable metal scaffolding is used across productions, and sets are designed for reuse where possible, reducing waste and improving resource efficiency. Since Season Two, a no single-use plastic policy has been in place on set. Catering prioritizes reusable serveware, with compostables used only when necessary. Water fountains are installed across the studio and locations to encourage the use of refillable bottles.
- Long-Term Carbon Reduction: Over 11 years of production, Outlander has reduced its overall carbon footprint by 65%, based on data collected through the PEAR production accounting tool by the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance (SEA). These efforts have brought emissions well below industry benchmarks.
With Outlander: Blood of My Blood continuing the story, additional sustainability initiatives are planned for the upcoming season.
