The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner’s Production team implemented an innovative system at Base Camp to demonstrate the real-world potential of eliminating traditional tow-plant generators for temporary power needs. In collaboration with key stakeholders from the Transportation and Electric departments, the team used a “Solar Ring” system for the duration of the shoot.

The Solar Ring system combined a central battery unit for energy storage and distribution with a fleet of solar-powered cast trailers. Designed to reduce generator demand, the trailers could generate up to twice the energy required for their own operation, feeding surplus electricity back to the central battery for use across the production.

In addition, The Breadwinner’s Camera Department selected an energy-independent truck for on-set operations, with a camera truck powered entirely by rooftop solar panels. This approach further reduced fuel consumption and allowed the truck to be positioned closer to set, since it did not rely on a traditional generator, which can be noisy.
